Batthyány Cellar – Winecathedral in VillánykövesdA cathedral-sized cellar? It is worth visiting!

Among the many cellars in the Villány Wine Region , – registered as architectural values – excells the arrangement of the Batthyány Cellar resembling a single nave church. Laird Batthyány Ádám made Italian church builders build a new tithe cellar from 1810 to 1814, in order to be able to include the increased amount of crops. The cellar arched with bricks was created in a specific ″L″ shape. The narrower cellar-branch leads into the church-sized, 10-metre wide, 40-metre long and 7-metre high inner cellar part.

The unfolding view, the huge space framed with barrels has a fascinating effect on everyone. As the level of technological development of the era did not make underground cellar construction possible, the hill above it was removed, and after elevating the walls of the cellar (church) the earth was brought back onto it. Because in the past wine used to transported on horse carriages, the cellar is not deep but very wide.

At the time of its construction it belonged to the Batthyány family, but due to a marriage it became the property of the Montenouvo family of Bóly, and until the end of World War II it had remained in their possession. After that it belonged to the Farming Cooperative of Villánykövesd, then from 1975 it was the property of the ″New Constitution″ Farming Cooperative, and from October 2003 that of Villányi Szársomlyó Ltd.
