Sights to visit in PalkonyaStop by the neighbouring cellar village, Palkonya, as well!

Palkonya, the one-street village of southern Baranya county with a population of 350 has preserved the architectural culture of the German winegrowers made to settle down here in the 18th century to this day. The most famous monument group of the village is the cellar-row consisting of 53 presses covering the hillside at the end of the village. In Palkonya half of the houses are also under monument protection.

St. Elizabeth Church, the Catholic church of Palkonya, also known as the Round Church, is under national monument protection. The church with a red dome can be seen even from far away and it is one of the most beautiful examples of the round churches in Hungary. The church was built by the Batthyány family and it was consecrated by them to the honour of St. Elizabeth in 1816. The church was built in Greek Revival style, the central church covered with a dome standing free, its tower is situated behind the shrine, opposite the entrance. It is not a Turkish-era church!)

Leaving Palkonya towards Villánykövesd, after a few hundred metres the steep and narrow way leading to St. Bertalan Chapel can be found on the right. The way leads to the premises of the winegrower, Somogyi Tibor, the chapel was built here between 2006 and 2007, mainly for the vineyard workers as a shelter and orientation. The chapel fortified by grapevines and with its quiet hidden location is an ideal place for prayer and relaxation. A miraculous place.

The chapel was oriented on August 24, the day of Saint Bertalan (Bartholomew): That time the rays of the rising sun light up the sanctuary and the picture of St. Bertalan within. The chapel is a popular open-air, church wedding and photographing place. 🙂
